A bond is a debt security representing a debt by a company or a State towards the bondholder. There are different types of bonds, but they all have one characteristic in common: the payment of an interest in exchange for the loan the bondholder granted.

A bond is emitted on the primary market. This is the market that deals with the issuance of new securities. One can only take part of a new issuance during the emission period. If you want to buy a bond outside of the emission period, you will have to turn to the secondary market, where bonds are freely traded.
